A Country at Boiling Point
In early September 2025, Nepal was shaken by massive youth-led protests, sparked by a controversial government decision to block major social media platforms. What began as a protest against online restrictions quickly turned into a national uprising against corruption, nepotism, and government mismanagement.
The unrest led to violent clashes in Kathmandu, with at least 19 protesters killed and hundreds injured. Within days, the crisis forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign, marking a historic turning point in Nepal’s political landscape.

The Trigger: A Nationwide Social Media Blockade
At the end of August 2025, the Nepalese government announced that all foreign social media companies had seven days to register locally or face a ban. When 26 platforms—including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube—failed to comply, the government enforced a nationwide social media shutdown on September 4.
This move disconnected millions of Nepalis from their families abroad, crippled small businesses dependent on online commerce, and silenced the primary stage for political dissent.
Instead of suppressing criticism, the ban ignited Generation Z protests in Nepal, fueled by anger at the privileges of political elites and the extravagant lifestyles of so-called “nepo kids”—children of politicians flaunting wealth while unemployment and poverty remain widespread.
Escalation: Deadly Protests in Kathmandu
On September 8, 2025, thousands of young demonstrators, many still in school uniforms, marched through Kathmandu streets, demanding the end of the social media ban and calling for transparency in government.
The authorities responded with force. Police used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse the crowds.
- At least 19 people were killed in what human rights groups have described as one of the deadliest protests in Nepal’s modern history.
- Hundreds were injured, many critically.
The violent crackdown was condemned by Amnesty International and other international watchdogs, who accused Nepalese police of using lethal force against unarmed protesters.
Political Fallout: The Resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli
The government’s heavy-handed response triggered a political earthquake. On September 9, 2025, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned following mounting domestic outrage and international pressure. Several cabinet ministers also stepped down, leaving the government in disarray.
The resignation was seen as a victory for Nepal’s youth movement, but the anger did not immediately subside.

Consequences Beyond the Resignation
Even after the restoration of social media access, protests continued. In several instances, demonstrators set fire to Nepal’s Parliament building and attacked the homes of high-ranking politicians, signaling widespread frustration with the ruling elite.
- The Nepalese Army urged for calm and dialogue.
- The Mayor of Kathmandu and public figures called on young people to channel their energy into peaceful reform.
- The United Nations demanded a transparent investigation into the excessive use of force by security forces.
A Generational Shift in Nepal
These protests revealed more than just anger over a social media ban. They exposed a generational divide, with young Nepalis demanding an end to corruption, nepotism, and political privilege.
For many, September 2025 will be remembered as the moment when Nepal’s Generation Z rose up, not just to defend digital freedoms, but to demand a new era of political accountability and reform.
Whether Nepal’s leaders can meet those demands remains uncertain—but one thing is clear: Nepal’s youth have found their voice, and they refuse to be silenced.
